ANNOUNCING THE CAROL AWARD – STATEMENT FROM CAROL BURNETT

STATEMENT BY NATIVE SAN ANTONIAN AND GLOBAL ICON CAROL BURNETT ON WOMEN IN FILM & TELEVISION SAN ANTONIO’S THE CELESTIAL AWARDS

The Carol Award Will Be Presented On November 12th At The Celestial Awards Show At The Historic Majestic Theatre In Downtown San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, July 8, 2024 – Women in Film & Television San Antonio (WIFT SATX+) announced today that The Carol Award named for beloved San Antonio native and global legend Carol Burnett will be presented to celebrate and honor a woman for her legendary excellence in media, entertainment, and advocacy for women at The Celestial Awards™ show on November 12, 2024 at The Majestic Theatre in downtown San Antonio.

“I’m thrilled that San Antonio is an official chapter of Women in Film & Television and mounting The Celestial Awards™ downtown at the Majestic Theatre just steps from The Nix Building (former hospital) where I was born. I could not have imagined as a little girl living with my grandmother on West Commerce Street that in 2024 The Carol Award will be presented to celebrate a woman for her legendary excellence in media, entertainment, and advocacy for women,” said Carol Burnett.

“I’m honored to have this award named for me and it truly seems a natural fit considering that the first theatre to use ‘Vaudeville’ in its name was founded in downtown San Antonio (1872) and Wings (1927) was the first Academy Award-winning film for the Outstanding Picture Award starring ‘The It Girl’ Clara Bow. The film had its first screening at The Texas Theatre on Houston Street steps from where The Carol Award will be presented,” continued Burnett, “This is a big Texas sky-sized full-circle moment!”

“The importance of women supporting women of all cultures in our industry can not be overstated. There have been women in my life who advocated for me, and in turn, I have carried that practice forward throughout my career. The Carol Award is a symbol of this action. Through consistent storytelling by and about women across all formats, and, with organizations like Women in Film & Television San Antonio whose programming is dedicated to advancing equity for women across Texas, we have an even greater opportunity to educate and entertain audiences everywhere,” said Carol Burnett.

WIFT SATX+ is proudly an official chapter of Women in Film & Television International “WIFTI” (Women in Film & Television International), a global network of more than 12,000 members with 70 partners and chapters located on six continents that for more than 50 years has been dedicated to advancing professional development and achievement for women working in all areas and expertise in the Media & Entertainment industry including film, video, journalism, performing arts, live entertainment, law, and more. Women in Film & Television San Antonio was chartered as a nonprofit member-based organization in November 2023 to serve people working in, or pursuing a career in the Media & Entertainment industry in San Antonio, the Hill Country, the Coastal Bend, and South Texas including students, partners, and advocates of the organization.

“We are honored for the Majestic Theatre to be home to the inaugural Celestial Awards and The Carol Award — named for Carol Burnett who was born right around the corner and has performed at the Majestic most recently in 2012. It’s fitting that the community will celebrate these vibrant San Antonio women under the sparkling, starry sky of the Majestic. The stars truly are aligned!” said Emily Smith, General Manager ATG San Antonio Venues: Majestic Theatre, Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, The Espee in St. Paul Square, and founding Commissioner of Women in Film & Television San Antonio.

When conceiving an annual major fundraising and awards event to align with other chapters of WIFTI including Los Angeles and New York City, Ceslie Armstrong, the founding CEO of Women in Film & Television San Antonio along with Vice President Eileen Kret and key advisors immediately identified Carol Burnett as ‘the North Star’ to emulate the tenor and through-line of what is now The Celestial Awards™. “We decided to push forward and mount our inaugural signature awards show in 2024 with the ‘blessing’ given by Carol Burnett for The Carol Award, and overwhelming support from our membership and community thus far. We are committed to creating and growing a meaningful platform — that is much overdue — to honor and tell the stories of extraordinary women past and present in media and entertainment in our region,” said The Celestial Awards™ Executive Producer Ceslie Armstrong.

“The Celestial Awards™ is a landmark event for Women in Film and Television San Antonio (WIFT SATX+), underscoring our commitment to empowering and recognizing women in radio, TV, film, and entertainment. These awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of women who are shaping the future of our industry. By honoring their contributions, we inspire future generations to pursue their passions and reach new heights. The introduction of The Carol Award, named after our beloved Carol Burnett, further cements our dedication to recognizing legacy and excellence in our field. Together, we are paving the way for a more inclusive and dynamic media landscape in San Antonio and South Texas,” said Callie Hoch, Director of Programming, Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, Tobin Entertainment, and founding Commissioner of Women in Film & Television San Antonio.

“The Celestial Awards™ are more than just accolades; they are a tribute to our rich cultural heritage and the profound impact women in Texas have on the arts. This event is a thrilling moment for our community, as we unite to celebrate and uplift incredible talent beneath the stars of the historic Majestic Theatre next November. Carol Burnett’s legacy stands as a beacon of inspiration. Her blessing not only emphasizes the importance of our event but also raises the standards of excellence that WIFT SATX+ aspires to achieve. Carol embodies the essence of dreams — illustrating how little girls living on Houston Street or any street in San Antonio can grow up to achieve greatness and make a lasting mark on the world of entertainment,” said Jaselyn Blanchard-Pace, Executive Director of The Majestic Empire Foundation, Co-Executive Producer of The Celestial Awards and founding Commissioner of Women in Film & Television San Antonio.

“The Celestial Awards™ is an important platform to spotlight women in our organization’s charter region while providing an annual original entertainment production where the community we serve can participate and show their support to these well-deserving honorees. We are so fortunate that Carol Burnett recognizes and has blessed The Carol Award that will honor a woman for her legendary excellence in media, entertainment, and advocacy for women,” said Executive Producer, and Women in Film & Television San Antonio founding Vice President Eileen Kret.
